I am not a grade school teacher but I attended college in Hawaii at
Hawaii Pacific University. First off, if you're a haole, you're simply
someone from outside of Hawaii. However, it usually is a word that
refers to caucasian people from the US Mainland. If you're thinking
about living on the leeward side I would be careful about moving up to
Wainae. The cost of living might be down (relatively speaking), but
the crime rate is a bit higher. There are many people who will
disagree with me. There is going to be down sides to wherever you live
but it you're a "haole" and you live way up on the northern half of the
leeward side of the island, please be cautious.
    Good luck!
