Re: "haole" in Hawaii
Posted by No'eau on 8/23/04

I am a haole that's lived here for more than 30 years, moving here
as a child in 1972 with my family. I attended schools in Wai`anae
on O`ahu, and graduated from Wai`anae High School. I think Hawai`i
is a wonderful place to live and a great place to raise kids. An
open attitude and aloha can go a long way. Please don't judge all
of Hawai`i too harshly based on the actions of a few. The majority
of people here in Hawai`i are wonderful, caring people who
appreciate the cultural differences of their neighbors and strive
to build great neighborhoods and communities. It is a small
minority that are ignorant racists, although that minority can make
life a living hell for a 'haole' child in school. I have noted some
of the responses seem to be from adults that moved over here
recently, never having attended school here nor with children in
school here. They have shared how they never have problems
being 'haole.' It's much easier as an adult to take the affronts
and slurs and insults. For a child it can be, and is, devastating.
I have friends whose children are in therapy for the severe self-
esteem damage done by malicious, ignorant, racists - children and
their parents. That being said, please reconsider making your home
in Hawai`i. The rest of us are always pleased to have wonderful new
neighbors. Just final advice, please be careful where you choose to
live and give serious thought to having your children attend
    private school.
