In my school district rumors start to happen this time of
year. People start to become defensive and look out for
themselves. My counselor came up to me the other day and said
that the counselors throught the state of Iowa are coming
together to form support for keeping counselors in the
schools. She suggested that Iowa Art Teachers do the same.
She basically said that if we cannot prove how the National or
Iowa Art Standards fit into the State Reading Standards then
all programs will be cut........that could be us. What ever
happened to Art for Arts Sake????????? Counselors and others
are given the time to attend conventions where all can be
present because they don't have to hire subs. If we are gone
subs have to be hired. We have never been treated with the
same professional respect. The art programs are successful and
maybe the state needs to try to make the Standards fit into our
Art Standards...we are seeing successes and the kids look
forward to school because of the arts. Julie
