How does having a Ph.D or ABD or publishing articles automatically make someone a better teacher? I'm not trying to saying schooling isn't important but majority of what makes a teacher an excellent teacher is what that teacher learns in the classroom and from colleagues. Additionally, districts just don't have the money. A teacher with a Ph.D. may not be any better of a teacher than one with a BA but the teacher with the Ph.D. costs the district significantly more. So unless that teacher with the Ph.D. really stands out, the one with a BA will get the job. It's not about whether high schools want you or not compared to universities. It's about supply and demand. And right now it is hard to get a teaching job (except those high demand areas) because of the number of very highly qualified candidates.
