In talking to others about online apps (I was hired in the dark ages before these), I'm finding that they are a good screening tool for those who are careless in spelling or grammar. We had two openings this year for reading/language arts teachers in my middle school. Finally, after tons of applications, the principal conducted several phone interviews. Unfortunately, after these interviews, he only found three qualified applicants. It's very difficult to hire teachers who speak incorrectly, especially when teaching reading/language arts. Supposedly there is a glut of English teachers out there, but I really wonder how many are competent teachers. This is our third year trying to add a language arts teacher to our team. The other two years, neither of those teachers was able to "cut it." I don't know if it's a sad commentary on our teacher preparation programs or on the quality of young people going into teaching.
