I would say don't worry about what you hear. You won't know
until your kids start school. Just be open-minded and take it
as it comes. If your kids are in fact behind, then work with
their teachers to find out what needs to be done to help them
catch up. If they are too advanced and end up being bored,
then see if they can be moved into honors or gifted & talented
programs, or get them involved in activities or classes that
will provide challenges. Skokie is a nice area and the schools
there are pretty good, so you should have a wealth of
opportunities in town. And you have the entire city of Chicago
just to the south with all it has to offer: museums, performing
arts, Lincoln Park zoo, sports, and all kinds of programs for
kids. Good luck, and welcome to Chicagoland!

P.S. - unless you're from the mountain regions of CA, you
should be more concerned with how your kids are going to handle
the brutal winters here than how they're going to deal with
school. I'm not an IL native, and I'm still getting used to
below-zero temperatures in January and February.
