I taught in both LA and the Bay Area before moving back to
Chicago 2 years ago. Things are a little different in IL, but
not tremendously so. California's standards tend to be driven
by making sure students learn specific skills, while in IL we
tend to focus more on the concept behind a given skill. So it
not just multiply 5 x 4, but what does it look like, how can
you explain it, etc. Depending on the ages of your children
you will notice more or less differences. By high school the
differences tend to be much smaller. Your kids will probably
not notice much of a difference. I hope the move is smooth and
a positive experience.
