Post: Earn Grad Credit in Self-Directed Professional Study Groups

    Posted by ASPD on 7/31/08

Interested in earning 1-3 hours of graduate credit (or
more) by participating in a self-directed professional
development study group to explore a topic of interest or
    need?

Administrators and teachers constantly engage in a host of
activities within the course of their work which
essentially equate to self-directed PD. Why not earn
    credit?

Just find 5-10 others with a common interest/need,
collaborate and follow the four easy steps below. Some
exampled of groups could be you and the teachers in your
team/department, a groupd of teachers from your district
or multiple districts anywhere in the country, a school
leadership team, a group of administrators (whether in
your district, or across the country). The only
requirement is that you all agree to pursue study of a
    common topic.

    4 Easy Steps -

    1) Form a group of 5-10 colleagues or friends with a
    common interest/need
    2) Identify a focus topic
    3) Collaborate with ASPD to develop a study plan
    4) Implement the plan, communicate with ASPD, and earn
    credit upon successful completion

    Some ideas -

*Professional development retreat(s) around NCLB issues
(day, weekend, week, once a month, etc.)
*Professional book study group (e.g., the latest ASCD book)
*Conduct online research to locate and evaluate resources
*Collaborate to develop a new resource (e.g., using wiki
technology or an online book application)
*Conduct on-site visits to other schools implementing
programs of interest to you or your school
    *Other ideas??????
