Re: teachnola pros/cons
Posted by thisrj on 1/27/08

I went through the teachnola application process & now live in NOLA teaching
second grade. While the app. was lengthy, other than the time/effort expended
to see it through (essay responses, group interview, etc.) I see no drawbacks.
The folks at teachnola were helpful and professional. However, I did find it
necessary to really stay on follow-ups after submissions of original application,
secondary information, & interview date. For example, though I signed up
online for my interview date/time, when I called to confirm, they didn't have me
signed on. I suspect that any lapse in response time from the organization is
the result of processing SO MANY applications, rather than any lack of
professionalism on their part. Do keep any originals & submit ONLY copies
whenever possible to teachnola or the RSD. And when you think you can get rid
of receipts/documentation b/c enough time has passed or you've received
confirmation of your submission -- DON'T. I've submitted some documents to
RSD 3 times over b/c they misplaced my information. Even after teachnola has
accepted an applicant, much of the documentation they require has to be
resubmitted by you to the RSD if you choose to teach here. While I was
accepted by teachnola, my principal actually contacted me for an interview by
finding me on the Teachlouisiana website. However, at my interview, being a
teachnola fellow was extremely helpful b/c she knew I'd already passed a
lengthy screening; I recommend that you apply to both. In addition, keep in
mind that while teachnola is seeking competent teachers, I believe they are also
looking for particular character traits; think folks with a positive & determined
personality. They are right to believe that personality type is important, if you
deal w/ the RSD you must keep your sense of humor and be committed to
working for the children of New Orleans. That said, even if you are not accepted
in to the teachnola program, if you really want to work here, simply follow up
    with Teachlouisiana.
I taught school for 10 years in Florida before moving to NOLA to teach in the
RSD. Never did I experience the extent of poverty, disregard by parents, or
frustraton--but neither did I experience such gratification and joy from
students' successes. Kids here are facing unimaginable challenges and hurdles,
they need all the cheerleaders they can get -- I wish you the best of luck in
your endeavor to teach here and hope my lengthy response has been of help.
