I just put in my application this week. I'm working in accounting
and I would like something with a human dimension. I'd like to
teach math. I like math, but when I was in school, I hated it
because I thought I was terrible in it. Now I realize that I was
just approaching it wrong. I was lucky; I had a teacher who
recognized my abilities and convinced me that I could do it. I'd
love to have the same impact on just one person in my life.
I haven't heard back from my application yet. I read somewhere
that they have about 40-50 spots to fill in the fellows (non-
certified teachers) program this year. The number of applications
has been over 2000 a year in the past. Does that mean only three
percent will be accepted? It's hard to say. Some of the non-
successful applicants could be those who dropped out of the process
after submitting an application.
For instance, I know some people opt out when they learn they will
have to travel for an interview event. I'm sure some visit New
Orleans and decide it isn't for them. Others might get jobs
elsewhere or might give in to parents or significant others who say
New Orleans is too dangerous. I'd like to know how much of the
attrition is due to Teachnola selectiveness and how much is due to
applicant selectiveness. I haven't found that information yet.
