Jefferson Parish- The tragedy of staggering crime
statistics and the frightening aftermath of increasing
court caseloads, prison overcrowding and high instances of
repeat offenders is now a national phenomenon. Throughout
the Parish, community leaders, law enforcement officials,
judicial representatives and concerned citizens agree that
something must be done to overcome the current crime
problem.

Thefts continue to be a problem for the parish, fueled by
thieves who pilfer tools, construction equipment,
appliances and building supplies from residences and
businesses either still trying to recover or helping to
rebuild after Hurricane Katrina

But investigators have also seen an increase in random
robberies, such as hold-ups in apartment and shopping
center parking lots, purse snatchings and business
robberies.

An outspoken sheriff in suburban New Orleans has again
upset black leaders, this time by suggesting deputies
would stop, search and run background checks on young
black males congregating in high-crime areas.
Jefferson Parish Sheriff Harry Lee said Friday he was
abandoning the plan, but made no apologies for it during a
joint news conference with Dannatus King, president of the
local branch of the National Association for the
Advancement of Colored People.
