Wow what a discussion! I am currently enrolled in a PhD program at
Walden- Early Childhood Education. I got my Master's in Education and
Bachelor's (psychology) from a traditional brick and mortar school. The
reality for me is I live in a rural area- over an hour from West
Virginia and quitting work to go to school (again) was not an option
for my family. I spent weeks researching schools. I found many
traditional and online schools unable to meet my needs or standards.
Eventually I talked with Walden and explained my research interests and
career goals. I talked with friends who are professors at traditional
schools and showed them the course work I would be doing. After much
discussion I enrolled in Walden and couldn't be happier.
Walden is not a dimploma mill, however, just as in any school, some
classes and professors/instructors are better than others. As an
example of just that I joke that Frostburg (traditional school I got my
other degrees from) should refund money for a few classes that I
considered "money" classes and worthless. Every school has money
classes.
As far as Walden credentials being worthless, I recently interviewed
for a director position with Head Start and the search committee was
very impressed with my qualifications and course work at Walden.
I'm most concerned about excellerated programs that give students 6
weeks worth of a course and then move on and in less than 18 months
students can have a Master's degree that took me 2 full years to
complete. Walden works on sememster or quarters. My PhD program will
take just as long to complete through Walden as it will at a
traditional school and I'm able to explore topics of interest to me and
not be bound by an advisor's research agenda like most traditional
grad students are.
I would suggest that you talk with someone at your department of
education to find out if Walden's education programs are accepted, I
believe they are. If you want to learn more about Walden I would
suggest you contact an enrollment advisor. I drove my enrollment
advisor crazy with questions. You're going to spend a great deal of
money on an advanced degree no matter where you choose to go, you
should have all of the facts then make the best choice for yourself.
Just a note to everyone: At this level we are supposed to be
professionals and show respect to each other. I was shocked and saddned
by the level of nastiness pertaining to this topic.
