I have been out of college for 10 years. I just took the exam
for the first time in May 2008. I came very, very close to
passing. I was not a Math major in college so I have not seen
many of the topics since High School.
I purchased some textbooks from Textbooks.com. I found that if
you time it correctly you can buy books for as little as $5
plus shipping. The best time to buy is in July when colleges
and universities are geting rid of the past years books and
making room for new books.
I did buy an MTEL preperation book published by REA ($20 @
Amazon.com). I found that it to be somewhat helpful. The book
reviews many of the topic areas very briefly. I felt the best
part was the practice test. I found that it was a good place to
start. However, I found myself using the textbooks for more in
depth review of test objectives.
The free sample exam that is provided by by NES is excellent
option.
Also, for $19.95 practice tests for the Praxis II test can be
purchased. This exam is slightly different. For example, a
graphing calculator is permitted. The MTEL does not permit a
graphing calculator. However, the topics are similar.

Time will be your bigest enemy. Use the "test objectives" as
your guide for the exam.

Good luck.
