Apply for every single opening possible - no matter the commute distance
or type of school/district. You must get your foot in a door and a few
years experience, then you can choose where you want to go. I started out
5 years ago in the poorest school in the poorest district, teaching ELL-
Grade 6 (on a waiver - I am Reg.PK-2) with a 2 hour commute. I ended up
renting an apartment near my district after a month and I'm still here.
After 2 years, I was able to transfer into a reg. kindergarten job in the
district. I may decide to stay here or I may apply for other jobs when the
economy gets better - haven't decided yet. The point is... get your
foot inside some door somewhere - some of my PK-2 friends started in
private pre-school/daycares, Headstart, YMCA and Boys/Girls Clubs
afterschool programs, non-public Special Ed.schools and Adult Education.
Didn't pay as well, but all this is great to build your resume. They all
eventually moved on to the jobs they went to school for in the first
place. Bad economy = less jobs = need to get creative. Good luck to all
of you seeking a job. I hope this helps.
There's jobs on boston.com - apply for anything remotely doable.
