A friend of mine has taken the communication and literacy
exam approximately 7 times, missing the required score by a
matter of a few points...most recently by 1 point. This
individual has been working for the past 15 years with
significantly emotionally disturbed, psychiatrically
impaired children with great success. He has earned
exemplary evaluations, and even the educator of the year
award at the school that he is currently working for. He
has his M.Ed in special education from an accredited
teaching college. He has been diagnosed within the past
year with a writing disability, which gives him a
significant disadvantage with regards to the many
components of the MTEL's, specifically with the C & L, as
he is a phonetic speller...he was able to earn the
accommodation of extended testing time. He has lost his
teaching status due to the inability to obtain a waiver,
soley based on unsuccessful attempts to pass the mtels...in
addition to the teaching status, he has had to take a
significant cut in pay and has a family to support...he has
everything he needs to be a teacher with the exception of
this...does anyone have any advice to help him appeal his
results...any positive advice would be appreciated...that
one point increase may have changed his whole life for the
better...hoping someone can help him out....thanks...
