Post: Career Changer with Math Prel License What do I do Next?
Hi,
I want to go into teaching in the Boston area (more than
willing to work in low-income urban schools) . I just
earned my initial license in High School and Middle School
Math, and would be very interested in getting people's
advice. I know that the job market even for teaching is
horrible right now. I have applied to the Boston Teacher
Residency ( I really hope to get in) and Teach for America
for 2010. I will know if I get into these programs with 10
weeks. Assuming I don't get into either, than what are my
next steps for getting a job in teaching in the next 6-10
months in the Boston area?
1) Should I just wait and keep working where I am and
assume that the job market for teacher's will improve to
the point where I will likely get a job next year?
2) Should I immediately earn my masters as the prelim
license is not good enough? (personally I don't want to do
this until I get some experience in the classroom)
3) Though I really want to stay in Mass, should I consider
leaving this state as the teaching market is just too
impossible to maneuver for a career changer?
4) Something else?
Any advice is appreciated.
