Posted by Torn on 3/08/08 I'm a new teacher and have lived in Michigan all my life, but with out terrible economy, lack of teaching jobs and jobs in general, I'm thinking of making a fast get away. However I hear Grand Rapids may be hiring next fall. I wonder is it worth a shot. Any Grand Rapids teachers out there? What's it like there? It seems pretty culturally diverse and tolerant of others. Are the children respectful? How are you treated as employees? Is it a pleasent environment? Does the union back you up? How long is the school day? Do you get adequate breaks and prep time?Are there any other jobs in Grand Rapids and if so what? I went to the GR schools website, but a lot of my questions couldn't be answered there. Including what is the salary????The one thing I fear about leaving Michigan is losing the strength of it's union on the other hand if worst came to worst and I decided to leave teaching or got released, it would be much easier to land a job outside of teaching in a different community.
