Re: The guy from GA is a pain!!
Posted by Missing MI on 3/13/08
I am so glad I finally have some people sticking up for me!! I made the choice to move to GA because unfortunately my husband never received a satisfying teaching position in MI. He worked in Detroit. After 5 years, we decided it was time for both of us to have a career. I was lucky enough to be able to take a leave of absence from Birmingham Public Schools. We may move back to MI in a few years. And yes, I left a lot of incredible things behind-incredible insurance, incredible pay! In GA, I am stuck doing a lot of work that teachers in MI simply were not expected to do-paperwork! If it's not documented, it didn't happen-Gwinnett County's motto. I have talked to my principals several times because my teaching is suffering-limited planning time and so much paperwork! The latest is the state writing assessment. Approximately 20 bubbles to color in for each child X 20 children. Yes, 400 bubbles. Plus a complete page for each child, as well. I spoke right up at the meeting. And just said this is absolutely ridiculus. What state political person came up with this one? Something like that would never go over in MI, but if it did subs would be provided. The only people hurting are my students! I can't plan because I have to fill in bubbles! The state test occurs in April- the entire curriculum is covered even though we have about 6 weeks of school left after the test. I asked teachers what we do when the test is done and they said oh just fun stuff, or you could teach cursive handwriting. We assess more than we teach here-could be the reason for our poor scores. I feel sad because the curriculum I taught in MI was a lot more challenging than the curriculum I teach now. I personally believe the 3 teachers with phd's are another example of how much teachers in the south do for nothing! You would hardly ever find a teacher in MI with a phd-financially it's just not worth it!!! The teachers with phd's are probably retired teachers from another state collecting 2 paychecks!!! I absolutely love living in GA! It is beautiful and sunny all of the time. If only my classroom had windows... But everyday I remind myself I am here for the beautiful weather and the great places to hike. If you want to teach, and you have the flexibility to move from MI, come and check out GA. I can't imagine that you would walk away without a job. Just bring some of your own water because it's almost all gone here!!
