I have had my cert. for five years. I ha e been subbing
for four. I have had three long-term assignments. Good
references. No job offers. Very few interviews. I am 46. I
also decided to make teaching my second career. Districts
have no problem having me sub, but won't give me a job.
One administrator actually told me they need good subs. I
did have a negative experience with one of my long-term
jobs. I also wondered if they could drag up information
about past employers and complaints against employers,
etc. That information is supposed to be strictly
confidential. Hmmm I wonder, is it age, is it
discrimination over past employer issues, I do believe
discrimination towards second career older teachers is an
issue. Perhaps more of us should share our stories and do
something about it.
