No, our kids didn't have to write on this one, but from what I
understand, there will be open ended questions next year. There
won't be a 4th grade writing test, so this writing will take the
place of that--from what I have been told. I teach 3rd grade. To
get my kids to think why, alot of times, when we are doing things,
I make them explain their steps out loud. For example, if we are
regrouping, then I make them tell me why they had to borrow. If
they have to correct a sentence, I make them tell me the rule for
why they made the correction they did. When we are spelling words,
I make them tell me why they used the spelling pattern they did.
You get the idea. Also, if students have to put their thoughts on
paper, they have to think more coherently. If teachers can get
students to put their "whys" on paper, they are more likely to be
able to think through on a test.

I went to a meeting at the end of last July in Jackson and Hank
Bounds was commenting on the level of difficulty of the new test.
He said he may not be popular but he wanted the students in our
state to be better thinkers. I think this test shows that.
