One seems to be designed to help non-Language Arts teachers think about ways to introduce writing activities into their classrooms. It is supposed to be about 10 hours long. There are links to websites---most of them pretty good---and journal entries. About three of the journal entries involve trying something suggested in an article and then reflecting on it. I think the 10-hour estimation is pretty close. I was feeling very snarly about the whole thing when I started it, but I actually found it to be one of the most useful of the state-generated staff development experiences I've had. I really prefer a self-paced experience to driving to the Brownstone in Raleigh and listening to someone tell me something I may already know. The journal side to the readings allowed me to think about my particular classroom---so I was sort of working away on planning and thinking that I already needed to do. I did most of it at home over a weekend. I can't see any reason to force a faculty to do it all at the same time in a lab at the end of the day. The other moodle looks like it is for training teachers to score the new writing test items. It doesn't look nearly as interesting. However, again, I MUCH prefer a self-paced individual training done at my convenience to being stuck in a room at the end of the day with forty other teachers. I never would have thought, though, that I'd be dreaming of returning to that awful state writing test. So many parts of this new arrangement seem unworkable. The technology requirement alone is going to be a major headache for a lot of systems.
