I can't give you any words of wisdom about other job options,
but sometimes it helps to know you're not alone. I retired
last year with 27 years and I truly wanted to make it 30, but
I knew I was on the verge of a breakdown and that is not an
exaggeration. From what I hear from my teacher friends who
are still in the trenches, the state of education has gotten
crazier than ever and I thank God everyday that I was able to
get out when I did and I pray for all of you who are still in
it. My retirement check is small and I have a part-time job,
so money is tight (what's new?)but I'll tell you what...I
think I added years to my life by getting out and to hell with
the money. I, too, sought counseling and was prescribed anti-
depressants. I know for a fact that well over half of the
teachers at my former school were/are on medication. I've
often thought that it would be interesting to know just how
many teachers are on meds to help them cope.
