Look, y'all, I know things are bleak. I don't blame you for
feeling discouraged. The general assembly has and is doing
massive damage to this state. And yes, I foresee an exodus by
teachers and teachers assistants but, honestly, I have to wonder
where they will go. It's tough everywhere. Ask the people in
Wisconsin and in Florida.
Please understand, the people of this state do NOT hate you. Our
problem is that, in the last 2 elections, we allowed ourselves
to be stampeded to the right wing by some very clever
campaigning and good old fashion scare tactics (read that, lies
and distortions) by some very selfish and short sighted people.
But there is a silver lining to this dark cloud. Really. In the
2012 election, despite returning GOP majorities to both houses
of the legislature, President Obama came within one percentage
point of carrying North Carolina. Yes, it was that close.
This means 2 things:
1. There are still a significant number of moderates/progressives
in North Carolina; we just need to make sure that more of us
show up at the polls in 2014. I don't think we did last year.
2. "All that is needed for evil to triumph is for good men to do
nothing." We got complacent in both 2010 and 2012. We can fix
