Re: Teaching positions in Art in Ohio

I got a job as an art teacher in NJ after I graduated from Miami University in Ohio in 2004. After going on about 10 interviews that summer driving all over NJ I was offered a job 5 minutes from my hometown. Talking to my art teacher friends that currently teach in Ohio I can say that it is cheaper in many ways. Yes the cost of living is less but at the same time art budgets are terrible. My budget in NJ is about $6,000 a year for about 500 students. In Ohio my friend has to travel between 3 schools and has a total budget of $2,000 is split between all the schools. The support at my school is in so many ways greater. Ohio is just a lot slower and in my opinion the value of and for the arts in much of Ohio is still developing. There are some towns that have great art depts. like Lakota east and west for example. I suggest you just keep trying in NJ for a little while longer. I encountered all of the excuses...we already had someone else in the district in mind (they tell me this after my 3rd interview!) How many interviews have you been on?
