Re: I need a teaching position!
Posted by there is a good reason why on 8/03/08

"many old timers are refusing to retire". Teaching 35 years or
longer makes a huge difference in retirement salary. I left two
years ago with a buyout of 35,000 dollars from the district and my
pension is equal to my former teaching salary. I get an annual 3%
cost of living increase each year. Friends that left earlier
    watched their income drop 50%.

Health insurance is another big factor. STRS does not offer the
coverage that was available to the teachers in my former district.
The coverage previously was a nominal expense and covered the
entire family. STRS inferior coverage would be 10 times more
    expensive.

Those teachers paid their dues and have to plan for a retirement.
Don't be critical - hopefully you will find a job in teaching that
you can do well for 35 or more years. Expecting older teachers to
move aside to make room for younger people means the difference of
thousands of dollars each month for the rest of those teachers'
lives. That is a selfish expectation! Pay your dues and WAIT your
    turn.

You said that the universities are not telling the prospective
teachers about the job market. Where is personal responsibility?
It is easy to see how many candidates graduate in education from a
particular college. It is also an easy online search to see the
number of job openings in desired districts. School districts
publish in the newspapers each fall the number of new teachers
they are welcoming that school year. The information was always
there - but you chose not to learn about the job market trends
when you chose your major. The situation has not changed much in
the past several years. My own children chose not to enter
education but made the decision to enter the health care fields
based on research of the job markets. You chose a saturated field,
K-3, and are blaming everyone for your lack of employment. Your
choices now seem to be relocate or be prepared to wait and hope
    for an opening.

I certainly don't mean to be harsh. It is important to have all
possible information before making life choices. There are now
life coaches - a good concept but personal responsibility and
parental advice are also extremely helpful.
