Homeschooling-- What's your opinion?

I'm retired from the public schools after 40+ years but

concerned about the article in our newspaper yesterday

relative to the fact that the article stated that Ohio

ranks third in the nation in homeschooling.

The article,perhaps many of you saw,stated that many

public schools in Ohio should be closed and others should

be consolidated. I beleve the article stated that one-third

of all school systems could be closed.

I tried to locate the article to no avail.

Sure would love to have several public teachers share your

views. My career was spent in the state of Ohio.

Another note: Homeschooling in Ohio is rapidly growing.

pksped If homeschooling regulations are considered rigid (I think that's the word the article use), I shudder to think what the laws must be in other states.

I homeschooled my own 2 children, both with lds, one of whom which the ps iep team thought would never learn to read or write, in fact they assured me that it would be impossible for them to teach her to read or write and wanted to put her in life skills classes.

since they had all ready assured me that they could not teach her to read and write, I desided that it would be unwise to leave her in their care.(well ok it took me a few years to get there, had I believed them when they first said it, it would have saved me time and energy)

and the result of homeschooling was.....

she tested into college at age 14, has an associates degree by age 17 and will have her bachlors degree at about 19.

oh my sons disabilities were not as severe, yet he did not test into college untill age 15, but still managed to get his associates degree by age 18.

there is a reason homeschool is on the rise, parents (even those with little education themselves) are apparently able to do things that public schools are not capable of doing.

Ohios homeschool laws are really not that hard by the way, its just a matter of filling out the paperwork correctly, the public school can not legally say "no" unless something goes very wrong, unless the paperwork is not filled out correctly. In ohio a parent dosnt get 'permission' to homeschool, they parent "informs" the superintendent, so long as the parent "informs" the superintendent correctly, he has no authority to do or say anything.

another reson for the rise in homeschooling in ohio is this, families who homeschool are "closer" then families who send their children to public school (spending all day everyday with each other does that) and kids who were homeschooled grow up and carry on homeschooling their own children (it also spreads between families, once one set of parents is succsessful with it and "learns the ropes" then their sisters and brothers start looking into it, and they help each other, so the extended families become closer as well) in my extended family more then half did or are currently homeschooling, by the next generation I imagine they will all be homeschooling.
