Re: Adding length to the school day and days taught

I'm certain there won't be any additional pay for additional work - I'm sure they're thinking we all got a great raise last year so we should be willing to work longer and harder. I fully agree that extra time at the end of the school year is NOT the answer - Linda is right - the kids shut down the beginning of May, if not earlier. If they made our school days one hour longer by adding one additional class period - not breaking that hour down into minutes added to our existing class periods - it might make a difference. That additional class period could be used for tutoring, remedial teaching, guided study hall, something worthwhile - or maybe classes on how to be respectful and behave like civilized human beings (but that's a whole other issue). As Lou wrote, my students are pulled out of class for things that really do not pertain to learning - our existing class time could be used more constructively. I think Sandy needs to spend some time in our schools when things have not been "slicked over and prettied up" for her visit - I think if she saw a typical week in a typical school that would help her make better decisions.
