    Re: Literacy First
    Posted by Linn on 9/24/08

I do not want to appear negative. I think the program does
help struggling readers. However, we had to spend two
hours a day as our reading block. Other subjects suffered.
Our middle school can certainly tell the difference in Math,
Writing, Science, and Social Studies scores. They
(Literacy First) have a representative who comes around from
time to time. Our teachers felt that he was VERY
condescending, and humiliated us with activities that were
degrading to us as professionals. Example: In a meeting
with our principal, reading specialist, and the teacher, the
Literacy First person would lay out six to ten M&M's. We
were to move an M&M across the table for things we thought
we did right in a particular lesson. It was humiliating.
Many teachers left and went with other schools with
    different reading programs.
