English and history have the same hiring outlook here. Bleak.
We did hire two English teachers last year. However, unless
they leave we won't hire another one for several years.
We do have one history teacher retiring. However, the
history department at the high school will downsize and he
won't be replaced.
Have both middle and high school certification if you can.
Middle school is more marketable.
The RI dept of ed can be slow in getting out certification
documents. Start now. Find out what you need and do it as
soon as possible. If your certification is not complete and
still pending, most districts will not even look at your
application unless the position is very hard to fill and
they have no applications with certification in hand.
I have linked the RI dept of ed page. Please note the time
they are taking to process applications and proceed
accordingly.
