I grew up in S.D. and my family keeps bugging me to move
back there. I live in Texas now and am teaching middle
school science and math. I don't mean this to be
derogatory, but how can anyone live on a teacher salary in
S.D.? My understanding is that starting pay is around $30K,
is that right? I don't make a lot in Texas either $45 but
that is a long way from $30. And from what I understand, a
teacher can drive over the border to Wyoming and make
comparable money to what we make in Texas. I love S.D. and
would really like to move back but I just don't see how I
could live on that salary. Either salaries must escalate
pretty quickly with tenure or you folks are magicians in
living on that kind of money. I don't really see how the
district can get good teachers for that kind of pay. Let me
know how you survive, please.
