Re: Teacher Shortage![]()

I, too, resigned lateley. Class sizes are smaller now, but
because we have so many special education students, disturbed
children who have been mainstreamed, etc., the job has become
much harder than it was before we had so much mainstreaming.
Although special ed. teachers are in the schools, they can not
be in every class where assistance is needed with special
needs students. For me, the straw that broke the camel's back
was a mentally ill child who monopolized classroom time with
outrageous behavior and administration would not take action
for a special placement for this child. This was despite the
standard actions and procedures that homeroom teachers take
when a child needs special placement. When I realized that no
action would be taken, I resigned, telling my administration
that teaching is no longer teaching. The other kids in the
classroom were sacrificed for the benefit of the special needs
child. I see this as the biggest problem teachers face
today. Good luck to all the teachers who keep plugging along.
