Please tell me where this so called teacher shortage is.

I keep hearing about this so called teacher shortage but I have yet to find where it is. I have great credentials, a really nice resume, I dress up to knock on doors, email, substitute, anything to get my face out there only to get in return emails stating "while we gave your application consideration another candidate... blah blah blah" without even so much as getting an interview. So, where is this teacher shortage and thanks for letting me vent.

Get an alternative license and teach! With so many certified teachers who did go to school to be a teacher, why in hades do they (government, schools, etc) allowing this? If I or anyone else can't make it in teaching I can't go be an accountant or theoretical scientist? right? _____

Because the colleges and universities are making money by having a steady stream of teacher applicants even though there is NO shortage and there has never been one.

It's also true that school districts want a steady stream of applicants so these people can substitute for years are on end with some kind of faint hope there will be a paying job at the end. A huge glut gives school districts all kinds of ways to keep current employees in line. After all, you WILL comply as a teacher to unreasonable demands by administrators since there are hundreds of others willing to do your job.

The fact is there hasn't been any push for teachers for years--YOU have not been paying one bit of attention to the news in the past decade. There are layoffs galore in every state; districts are being privatized and teachers demonized and tossed to the curb because they are too "expensive."

You better be considering a different line of work. You don't want to be in your late fifties, illegally fired, and not be able to get back into the teaching field. Presumably you are young enough to go into something else. Take advantage of it and get away from this. You are not the exception to the rule, you are not better than the thousands of other teacher applicants and terminated teachers who are also seeking a job

Lynne in TN The only "shortage" I have ever actually seen in action is physics, chemistry, and high school math, and even there it can be hard to find a job if you are in the wrong geographical area or have something working against you. Sorry.

Anna I hear you. I am in the same boat. I have been trying for a year and a half. I have been on interviews but nothing. I have my liscense and am qualified. What really bothers me is that the school systems where I live would rather hire someone who doesn't have theirs. Simply because the principal likes the person. I am about to give up.
