Do Not Teach in Jefferson County Schools

A year and a half ago I got blamed for a middle school moonshine incident, as some kids brought the stuff in and drank it everywhere in school out of bottle caps and 7 Up and Sprite bottles (that the principal allowed), during classes, and class change.

So within a few days after this crisis broke, I was called into the principals office and told to sign a statement taking responsibility for the whole moonshine ordeal as it "happened in your room" liability. The next morning the assistant principal came into the breakroom and started a casual conversation with me and another teacher said she had spent the prior afternoon reviewing several hours of video of many students drinking moonshine all over the school during class change and coming out of other teachers classrooms. Yet in the coming days no other teacher had to sign any statement of responsibility for their personal file, just me, as I had no tenure (or was not a local). So I probably should not have signed it but did not want to create waves (thus keep my job). What a mess.

I got non renewed at the end of the school year because the principal rolled this incident into my observations (classroom management). I got in the most trouble out of everyone (including the kids who drank the moonshine and got caught). And all I did was come into work that fateful day. The grandfather that gave the kids the moonshine did not even get in trouble. Just me, I had always prepared myself to be ready for a crisis but not on this level of deceit by a school principal and covering up important evidence.

So fast forward over a year later, I still cannot secure any teaching jobs and my 10 year teaching career now appears to be ruined. I have interviewed with other schools but they drop me in a hurry from consideration once they call my old school for a reference......thanks all in part to Jefferson County Schools and the superintendent who was ambiguous about being fair about this situation. I would warn anyone reading this teaching in Tennessee to be wary of joining this system if you see a teaching vacancy.
