FDR's programs were essentially the same as Hitler's and
Mussolini's. Both of those men bailed out companies (as Bush,
Hoover, FDR, and Obama have done), however the swapping of
common stock for preferred stock for the gov't in these
companies as Obama has proposed would give the gov't a large
enough vote in the shareholders meetings to control the company
much as Mussolini did. Many of President Obama's ideas mirror
the corporatism of Mussolini. FDR should not be considered one
of our greatest presidents for his economic work. During his
administration the unemployment rate never dipped below 14%
until 1941 when we began to prepare for war and the avg.
unemployment rate for his term in office until WWII was around
18%. This is hardly successful considering many of the
European countries and Canada were in the Depression a much,
much shorter time than we were. Also, his policies included a
tax that was ultimately thrown out where a business would have
to pay 85% of its after-tax profits in taxes and could not
write off any capital expansion. There was actually a second
depression in 1937-38 and this was on the end of his most
oppressive tax policies that went into place after he gained
control of the court in 1935. A book I highly recommend to
anyone is FDR's Folly by Powell; it is one of the first
economic analyses of the New Deal ever written and it traces
blame back to Hoover and the fools of the Federal Reserve, but
spends most of its time discussing the flaws in FDR's policy
and uses a multitude of numbers to back it up. Also, there was
a negative correlation between what New Deal workers were paid
and how heavily FDR carried their state. The more votes he got
the less the workers were paid and vice versa. This worked as
an elaborate and brilliant vote buying scheme (a marvelous
political move). An instance of this that I specifically
remember from the analyses were the workers in a particular job
from NJ and VA. FDR carried VA by much more than NJ. The
workers in VA made 25 cents an hour and the same workers in NJ
made $1.25/hr.
