As I said I volunteer for causes that I support. I raise money and
food for the local Christian food pantry. I help the local no-kill
animal shelter. But I also have my own family, my own kids.
This is just for publicity-although the vaunted claim is that it is
for unity. I'm not sure what the rules are in our state, but I'm
going to ask my association what they think. My school has
become one of those where if you don't contribute to United
Way when the drive happens or you don't support the local
foundation or you don't join PTA, you're seen as some sort of
outsider. I didn't join PTA because frankly the organization
does nothing for my department or for me as a teacher. I have
joined in the past only to have all requests ignored. It's just a
very uneasy feeling I get that if I don't just go along with every
venture the building team comes up with, I'm viewed as
someone causing trouble. I have an aging parent and family of
my own. Do I not deserve to say how I use my weekends?
