You do not need to enroll with ACT since you are
already a teacher. I suspect that ACT just wanted to
make some money off of you. What you will want to
do is apply directly to TEA for an application review.
Assuming your Louisiana certificate is accepted you
will be issued a provisional certificate allowing you to
teach PE for one year, while you take the TeXas PE
examination (K-12). If you took the Praxis exam you
may be issued a standard certificate directly. The
application review takes about 4 weeks, but you could
potentially have the certificate by January. You could
also plan ahead and take the PE TeXas exam while
having your application reviewed, you can then
request the standard certificate as soon as the review
is completed, the application time for this is a few
days. In addition you will need to complete and pass
the TeXas PPR exam (EC-12). Either way this process
is much faster and cheaper. The review is $164, the
exams are $120 each and the certification fee is $54.
Lastly you will need your fingerprints and background
check completed which is $45. The total is about
$500, much less than ACT is charging you for their
program (and you will have to pay the test,
certification and fingerprint fees either way).
Once you have the standard certificate you can add
History (7-12) by taking the TeXas exam. You can even
take the exam in advance at the same time you take
the other exams.
As far as a job goes in Houston as a social studies or
PE teacher, do you know someone in HISD that can
get you a job? There are lots of PE and Social studies
teachers who want to coach that can't get a job, there
just isn't a demand and a very large supply. You could
be waiting forever and never get a job. As far as
coaching football goes in HISD, if the district hasn't
approached you, then it's not going to happen. You
don't just show up at HISD's central office and they
give you a football team because you always wanted
to do it.
