when should you give a break?

I have some seniors that have jobs after school. I'm sure for the most part they are just minimum wage jobs to earn some pocket money. I have given students the opportunity to come to my classroom after school to work on computers if they don't have access outside of school. Should I have a policy where because this time is offered, there is no excuse for work being incomplete, or would I need to give students who have a job a break? Could I not hold them accountable?

However, I also think that teachers need to be aware that students have lives beyond school--as do teachers. One way to do that is to give students a reasonable amount of days for assignments that require significant time outside class, and especially using technology that all may not have easy access too. If at all possible, there should be options about when the extra computer time is available--before school, after school, during lunch, etc. You might also consider giving students a "late work pass" or a couple of them which they can use to submit an assignment late without penalty. This might be a good solution if you really believe that students are unable, for good reason, to get the work done on time.

If the computer access outside of class is a major issue in your community, you may need to provide more in-class time for students to complete the work.
