If you had to make a decision between getting completely out of debt or paying your kids' college tuition for a year, which one would you choose? They would have to take out a student loan otherwise.
flacka I always felt it was my responsibility as a parent to pay for their undergraduate education so I would pay for the schooling. Obviously, not everyone feels this way and don't feel they owe their child a post secondary education.

tjbteach I think a lot would have to do with how much debt? i would pay all debt, every thing that is mine will eventually b theirs anyway. I have two boys going to college in the next 5 years.

men52 I think I wouldn't go totally debt free - pay it down but maybe not pay everything for that first year of college. My husband lost his job in our youngest daughter's freshman year of college so all of our good intentions went down the drain. She was going out of state but even with our much less financial support, she graduated in four years. She h...See More

Lulu A few things to think about-

-Consider the rates for your debt. If we're talking consumer debt such as credit cards, the rate is almost certainly higher than the rate for a student loan. If you have a low-rate home equity loan it might not make sense to pay it off.
