This is a great way to introduce the idea of poetry as applicable to students' lives. Have a number of poetry anthologies available for the students on the first day of class. Give them a few minutes to mingle and look through them, perhaps to sections that you have marked. Make sure to have "serious" poetry as well as "funny" poetry. Then, have the students read a line or two which they like or relates to themselves as they introduce themselves to the class. Giving them a cookie for introducing themselves also gives them a little more enthusiasm!
