Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Indiana PA, US
Materials Required: detailed Pictures of the ear
Activity Time: In lesson
Concepts Taught: Anatomy and Physiology of the Ear

Rationale:
This lesson is designed to build upon students understanding of the anatomy of the ear and the
pathway of sound. It is expected that upon completion of this lesson students will be able to name all of
the parts of the outer, middle and inner ear and be able to explain each parts purpose in detail. In
addition, it is anticipated that students will be able to detail the pathway of sound incorporating all
parts of the ear and explaining changes in energy at different sections of the pathway.
Objectives:
Terminal Performance Objective:
Following the lesson on the anatomy and physiology of the ear, the tenth grade deaf students will be able to
label a diagram of the ear and write an essay detailing the pathway of hearing explaining the purpose of every
part, with 90% accuracy.
Enabling Objectives:
The students will be able to:
state the physiological purpose for the parts of the outer, middle and inner ear
explain the changes from acoustic to mechanical to electro-chemical energy and where this occurs
group different parts of the ear into one of the three categories of the ear
name a part of the ear when given a description of it
know the correct sequence of the pathway of sound
define vocabulary of the ear
label parts of a picture of the ear

Lesson Activities:
#1 Time Spent: #2 Teacher Procedure: #3 Learner Behavior: 10 minutes lecture on new vocabulary, take notes
parts of the ear and their
physiological function

20 minutes discuss the three parts of take notes
the ear and what specific
parts are included in each
30 minutes show a power point take notes
presentation labeling and
describing the different
parts of the ear and
talking about areas of
energy changes, detail
the pathway of sound
through the ear using
the same power point
presentation again
30 minutes be available to look label pictures
