Indiana University of PA, Indiana, USA
Materials Required: chalk board, calander, shapes
Activity Time: 20-30 minutes
Concepts Taught: Spanish and English, shapes, colors, and dates

I. Rationale

By the end of this lesson the learner will, in addition to recognizing a pattern, be able to recite the colors, numbers, and shapes in both Spanish and English.

II. Objectives

As a result of this lesson, the Kindergarten students will be able to:

1. Recognize a pattern.
2. Associate a shape with an action.
3. Observe the basic idea of a rhythmic phrase through shapes, colors, and body movements.
4. Speak in both Spanish and English.

The learners will perform this task with 95% accuracy as a result of the teacher modeling the behavior prior to asking the students to do it. After the presentation the Kindergartners will be able to demonstrate the proper names for each shape and color in Spanish and English. They will also be able to associate a shape with an action and identify a rhythmic phrase.

III. Materials

Calendar in front of the class
Shapes for each day
Pointer stick

IV. Procedures

A. Introductory

The teacher will have all the students stand in lines of 5. One student will be picked to put the date on the chart and to use the stick to point at the days of the week. The teacher will tell the students that the pattern that they are forming with the shapes and colors is just like writing a musical sentence known as a rhythmic phrase. The students will repeat the teacher's words.

B. Principle Activity

From this point on everything will be said first in Spanish and then in English.
The instructor will lead the students through the Date, Month, and year.

Cual es la fecha de hoy?
Hoy es trente de septiembre dos mil

What is today's date?
Today is September 30, 2000

Que dia es hoy?
Hoy es Sabado

What day is today?
Today is Saturday

Cual es la nombres de las dias de la semana?
Domingo, Lunes, Martes, Miercoles, Jueves, Viernes, Sabado

What are the days of the week?
Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday

After the date and day is determined the student will place the correct shape on the date in the sequence of triangle, square, circle, circle.

First we will go through the calendar and say the names of the shape in a row adding the body motions (clap, stomp, snap, snap respectively)

Cuantos formas en la frase?
cuatro

How many shapes are in each phrase?
four

Next we go through the colors (Amarillo, verde, anaranjado, anaranjado) (Yellow, green, orange, orange) using the same body motions to represent the rhythmic phrase.

C. Concluding Activity

The teacher will ask the students the three ways that they noticed patterns/ phrases in the calendar of the month. (Colors, shapes, and the sequence of beats)

V. Evaluation

The teacher will be able to assess what the students have learned by their answers to the previous questions and through their participation in the activity.
