Roosevelt Elementary, Jamestown, ND/USA
Materials Required: literature on Hawaii, construction paper, tissue paper, food items from class.
Activity Time: 30 minute lessons for a week.
Concepts Taught: gaining knowledge of Hawaii

Day one I decorate my classroom with homemade palm trees. I used large carpet rolls and wrapped with bulletin board paper and made the palms to stick out the top. We talk about Hawaii and I ask what the students know about it. Then we talk about their culture and how the children there dress. Art projects we make through out the week are grass skirts with construction paper, flower leis, pack"suitcases" by cutting out of magazines what they may need when we take our trip. On Friday we have a class luau..I have the students bring in grapes, pineapple, oranges, kiwi, etc. and hotdogs. The hotdogs we turn into octopus! Cut them in half and cut up the bottoms. Cook in a frying pan with a little water and the "legs " curl up to look like octopus. The kids love it..we dance to Hawaiian music and eat and enjoy the "warm" weather in our room!
