On the first day of school, I have students write a letter to themselves (I do four years from now because they are freshman and I will mail it to them as seniors, but you could use any length of time). They then address an envelope to themself and seal the letter inside. I then hold onto these letters until the time in which they were written for and mail them to the students. Most students love this activity and it's a good way to start the school year.
