Students paint and put wheels on 27 shoe box "freight cars and engine". Each is assigned and a letter. Cars are then arranged in alphabetical order.
As letters are introduced, students are invited to (go on a treasure hunt at home) bring items for the Alphabet Express that begin with the letter of the week (eg.P:paperclip, pins, pictures)
This is explained in a newsletter which further enhances the home/school connection.
