I would like to invite you to participate in an online reading and writing program that my students and I have developed. The Eager Reader is a site devoted to good books for students in grades 5-8. I conceived the idea this spring in response to the number of eighth graders in my classes who didn't know how to begin finding books they might enjoy reading.The web site is in its infancy. We have showcased books from seven authors, but my plans are for this to become a six month reading and writing program during the school year 2004 -- 2005. We will add new authors and titles continually. Because this is a student-driven site, the potential growth is unlimited.
The site is designed to target three areas of language arts skills: 1) reading improvement through critical analysis; 2) critical writing skills as your students and students from other districts write their own summaries and reviews; 3) and editing / revising skills as you assist students in completing their own reviews of books and post them on the site. It is an excellent opportunity to incorporate the use of technology in our classrooms.
Several students included video clips into their books' pages where they play the roles of one of the main characters. I hope this unique feature will spark students' interest in the titles we have chosen to exhibit.
Please take a moment to visit the site. We are excited about offering all middle level students a place to find books that other young people have enjoyed reading. We welcome your feedback.
