Getting to AmericaUntil 50 years ago, most immigrant's came to the United States in ships. Some ship voyages were difficult, especially for the people who were brought from Africa as slaves.
The voyage could be very hard. Even for immigrants who chose to come to the United States. Between 1900 and 1920, 13 million immigrants arrived in ships from europe. Many of these immigrants were poor. They traveled on the bottom deck of the ship. The bottom deck was often crowded and windowless.
Today, most immigrants to the United States arrive on airplanes. However, immigrants from our north American neighbors, Mexico and Canada, can drive to the United States, or even walk.

Chimpanzee Clans
Chimpanzees belong to groups of 30 to 70 members called clans. Chimpanzees move around the forest in smaller groups that are part of there clan. Each group has won male, two or three females, and their young. These groups teach and protect young chimpanzees.
It takes six years for the young chimpanzees to learn all they need to know. Young chimpanzees learn how to use sticks and stones as tools. They learn which fruit and insects to eat. Young chimpanzees learn the sounds that clan members use to give one another information. The names of the 58,000 Americans who died in the war are writen on two long walls of polished granite. At first some people did not like Maya Lin's design. The polished black granite memorial had none of the flags or people that most memorials have. Now, people praise the memorial. As vistors touch the names of those who died, they see their own faces in the polished granite. Americans remember the memorial that Maya Lin designed.

Two Kinds of Animal Communities
Many animals, such as squirrels, live near one other. Mother squirrels take care of their young for the first few months of their lives. After that, squirrels are on their own. Squirrels do not stay together so their animal communities, or groups, are not permanent.
