Comprehension Check:
On page 37 of The Trouble With Lemons by Daniel Hayes, there is a great describtion of a scene in Colorado. As an alternative exercise to question and answer, I have the students illustrate what they have read. I look for 13 main items that are mentioned in the paragraph. I use a rubric to grade. The students seem to enjoy the break from the traditional "pencil/paper" and you would be surprised to see the art work that comes from some of them. The book is well written, something that the middle school student can relate to! It is always a class favorite
