G-K Middle School, Genoa, IL USA
Materials Required: video or movie with those themes, character chart
Concepts Taught: identifying character traits

I use this lesson with my 8th graders to help them recognize the 6 character traits in our Character Counts program. We go over the traits, then I show the movie in 20-30 min. long increments, making sure students find one to two traits and examples each day. The video can be shown for about four class periods. Then you can have students use that chart to write an essay.

Akeelah and the Bee

As you watch the video Akeelah and the Bee, watch for examples of each of the character traits of Character Counts. In each box, write at least one example. Be prepared to use this information to write an essay telling how Akeelah exhibited each of these traits and how you exhibit these traits.
