Describing rocks
working as a team select a rock from a pile and write down as many words or sentences that describe your rock.

After you have written the description put it back in the pile of similar rocks and the next group trys to find it (WOULD probably need older grade buddy to do the writing and reading and younger child to listen and find)

Everyone brings in rocks and maybe someone in the community is a "rock hound" and invite them. Label the rocks and read Magic School Bus Inside the Earth

What is alike and different
try different things like water

Using your collection line them up by attributes.. first with 1 attribute the same then on and on.

Make stalagmites and stalactites using baking soda and VERY hot water (BE CAREFUL)
stir in until no more will dissolve. Pour an equal amount of the solution into each cup, and arrange the cups on the tray so that the saucer fits between them and is touching both of the cups. Fold the string in half and place an equal amount into each cup and let the string hang between the cups drape over the saucer. Cover the cups loosely with the foil or plastic wrap and set aside for a few days (capillary action moves the baking soda through the string until it reaches the bottom of the curve. Gravity forces the solution out of the string a drop at a time. Baking soda builds up and forms a desposit.
