2nd/3rd grade teacher, Los Angeles, CA
Materials Required: blank tic-tac-toe papers with four games, 3x5 cards with word sound and two kids per game
Activity Time: Center activity - 10-20 minutes
Concepts Taught: practice word families

Students will practice word families taught throughout the year
by playing tic-tac-toe spelling. Write word family sounds on 3x5
cards and put into a basket. Game is played in groups of 2. Four games
are played total. Each student picks a 3x5 card with the sound and then
play tic-tac-toe by spelling words that have that sound. Example -
student #1 picks the -at sound and student #2 picks the -oy/-oi sound.
The student gets a square by spelling a word with that sound. Since there
are 4 games per sheet, the students should pick new sounds each game. This
is a good independent game that can be played during center time. New sounds
from word families can be added as new sounds are studied.
